Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo July 1, 2007

In short: They say time is the fire in which we burn…

Thoughts: A real jem of a movie. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) has built up a strong cult following amongst anime fans on the net, and it’s not hard to see why. This is a really good piece of down-to-earth sci-fi – that is a sci-fi concept introduced to an everyday situation.

It’s a standard plot in many ways, Japanese high-schoolers, a trio of friends, teenage troubles with love and what the future may hold. It’s not as if there’s a shortage of teen-who-stumbles-upon-time-travel stories. But Toki wo handles it delicately with a good pace, likeable characters, great character designs and a good soundtrack. And it’s not afraid to show a bit of teeth either – the moments when Makoto realises the consequences of her actions are introduced naturally and never feel like they’re morals being stuffed down your throat.

Anyway, whilst I adored the film, it did lose a little of it’s charm when the big explanation occured. Without giving too much away, it somehow seemed a little too convenient an explanation, and I felt that some aspects of the revelations (like the painting for instance) weren’t expanded as much as they could be. There’s no denying it was pretty sweet though, and I’m glad it wasn’t a totally happy ending. Gives the ending a bit of an edge.

Overall, it’s certainly one of the best anime movies I’ve seen for a while and I’d highly recommend it.
