In short: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Thoughts: Actually not that bad. I feared the worst after some dire reviews, but Emilio Esteves’s directorial debut was actually rather assured. Some might say formulaic and a little manipulative, but you can’t fault a guy who knows the procedures. It is rather head-turning at first, with star after star after star putting in bit performances. But they come so often that the star factor wears down after a while and the characters take hold. There’s far too many people here to get into any depth with any of them, but it does present a snapshot of American life in 1968. The sight of American hopes and dreams may prompt the gag-reflex in some, but I didn’t feel any excessive patriotism. If anything the tragedy of so many hopes pinned on one man came through strongly, for which the director and ensemble should be congratulated.
