Anime db: My Neighbours the Yamada’s

In short: The adventures of a (a)typical family in modern day Japan.

Thoughts: A curious entry into the Studio Ghibli catalogue, but a good one. Isao Takeda’s 2D slice-of-life comes as a surprisingly welcome change to the kaleidoscope of Miyazaki. To be fair, it’s not much of a movie, the ‘story’ made of short anecdotes on various events in the Yamada family year. It’s like watching several sitcom episodes back to back. But this is also what makes the film so charming. Each of the family is brilliantly characterised and their experiences painfully true. Moreover the watercolours match the domestic atmosphere perfectly and are realy quite beautiful. I can imagine many people passing this over in their Ghibli watching, which is a real shame.
