Cars (2006) August 7, 2006

Saw Pixar’s latest on Saturday night. Have actually been very excited about it, having enjoyed the fabulous Pixar exhibit at the Science Museum a couple of months ago. The reviews have beeen extremely disappointing, but for once I disagreed. I thought it was loads of fun, with a lot of heart. I had no problem with Owen Wilson, though on paper the idea of laid-back Owen as a speed-star doesn’t quite sound right. But he showed in Zoolander he can act the superstar and it works here. The animation is spectacular, with the opening stadium scene and the detail of Radiator Springs particularly outstanding. The one complaint was the horrible Randy Newman song in the middle – cheesy as hell (if hell is indeed chedder). Like A Bug’s Life, it seems to lack the x-factor that made most Pixar movies instant classics but it’s highly enjoyable all the same. Mind you, I have a soft spot for racing movies. I still love Days of Thunder.
