Guardian Unlimited Football | Columnists | Nicky Campbell: ‘real’ fans put club before country

I’m sure Nicky Campbell’s written this before. But in any case, he highlights the reality of international football for most fans. I’m always arguing with YH about this. His love of England dwarfs his support for Liverpool, but he’s a relatively late convertor to the beautiful game – and it’s England that converted him. For me it has been and always will be United that comes first. I’ve always felt that, for football fans whose clubs are ingrained into their very being, international football brings a refreshing sense of neutrality – you can enjoy good football without the terror of what it means for your team. Of course, everyone has their national allegiences, but it matters a little less. With a week to go until the World Cup, I think I’ll probably be following Italy again.
