BBC SPORT | Football | Premiership | Man Utd 0-0 Sunderland

So the dream dies, in typical fashion. I had a bad feeling as soon as everyone predicted a big win against Sunderland. It’s the dead certs that always surprise you. Still, who would have expected the league’s bottom side to put in such a performance? And who would have thought a team playing so well could rediscover the tepid side of themselves that was so familiar early in the season? It’s a bit of deja vu really. A win against a relegation candidate would have moved us within four points of Chelsea, having played a game more. Last year a win against Crystal Palace, facing relegation, would have put us within two points of Chelsea, having played a game more. Who knows what the added pressure might have done to Chelsea, but we choked on that one with a 0-0 draw and we choked again here.

The result, coupled with Chelsea’s win at Bolton, leaves us nine points behind on a weekend that promised so much. The league title has most definitely gone and it was lost through our own actions. As I’ve said before, it would have been rather fortuitous had we managed to pull-off the miracle after so many poor displays this season. I still believe second-place, five points behind, is achievable and would represent a good season in the circumstances. But I can’t help feeling disappointed. I was always cynical, but typically, once you start to believe it all slips away.

On the plus side I can finally wash my United shirt. Three months, eight wins, I thought I had a (smelly) lucky charm.
