The problems of two people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this world… normally. But in the world of anime the feelings of a couple of teenagers take preference over the fate of the world.

Iriya no sora, UFO no natsu (Iriya’s Sky, Summer of UFO’s – yes that really is the title) follows High-school boy and UFO enthusiast Asaba Naoyuki as he meets and falls for the mysterious Iriya Kana one summer. Based on a popular novel, this short OAV series mixes high-school romance with UFOs, Roswell conspiracies, military occupations and sci-fi war of the worlds. Needless to say it was a little confusing at times, but overall pretty amicable viewing.

The story skips about like a needle on a record player, each episode jumping to a point in Asaba’s summer, which often left me feeling like I’d missed the big event. There’s some cool looking mecha and an intriguing ‘war’ in the background, but you never hear much about it or see any action because that’s not the focus of the series! This isn’t a bad thing, since it’s a nice change focusing on the little people instead of another all-action epic. Room for a spin-off?

Overall, the animation is good, the characters reasonably appealing (though how many more wimpy, emotional anime heroes can we take?), a nice soundtrack and an interesting story. Fleeting and fun like a summer memory.
