Fuck yeah! When you see a film done in puppet supermarionation, by the creators of South Park, you kind of know what you’re going to get. It will be crude, it will take the piss out of everyone and it will also try to make some kind of cynical post-modern statement on it all. But it will be damn well entertaining. Plus, I saw this on an open air screen in Rio de Janeiro. Sorry, I’ll try not to be too smug about that.

So Team America. Fun, fun, fun! The plot, for what it’s worth, follows self-appointed protectors Team America in their quest to defeat world terrorism. To this end, they recruit world’s greatest actor Gary Johnston and blow the living crap out of mastermind Kim Jong-Il and the naive Film Actors Guild (FAG). And sure there’s all kinds of turmoil, moralising, puppet sex and musical numbers along the way. This is South Park the movie on a slightly grander scale, politically incorrect but just knowing enough to get away with it. The use of puppets is inspired and the musical numbers are annoyingly catchy, without being particularly clever. In fact, the while movie isn’t particularly clever but at least it makes us laugh at what has become an overly serious situation. And by the way, did I mention that I watched this on an open air screen in Brazil?
