‘South of the Border, West of the Sun’ by Haruki Murakami October 28, 2008

A relatively short Murakami novel at less than 200 pages, but I really feel brevity enhances a Murakami story. I’m a big fan of his short stories and having just previously finished his opus A Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, I have to admit I was suffering a bit of reader’s fatigue.
So maybe it’s the brevity of the story, but South of Border shot right into my favourite Murakami stories, heck, maybe even one of my favourite books.
(Slight spoiler warning. Maybe don’t read if you really don’t want to know) (more…)

I went to see Vampire Weekend at the Forum in Kentish Town on Saturday night. It’s not every week one of my favourite bands plays 20 minutes down the road from me.
Actually they’ve only recently become one of my favourite bands. I woudn’t be into them today if it weren’t for my friend Kerri raving about them in the pub one night. Kerri has good taste and I was looking to “get back into English music” so I thought why not?
I’m glad I took the chance. As it turns out, they weren’t English after all, they’re from New York (much like the Strokes and Asobi Seksu, who I also love) but at least the language is right.
Vampire Weekend are what my friend Jenni terms ‘disco indie’. That quirky, semi-70s indie sound of guitars, hooks and catchy beats. Being a pop lover, what really gets me is how good a mood it puts me in whenever I hear their music. Like good zeitgeist tunes the lyrics seem semi-philosophical whilst not actually making a whole lot of sense much of the time. But the riffs are so damn great. I defy you not to sing along to Oxford Comma, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,.. heck, the whole album.
They were really great live. Lead singer Ezra Koenig comes off the epitome of a really nice guy. Decently spoken, decently dressed (as one would expect of a bunch of Ivy League graduates), polite and full of enthusiasm. And Chris Tomson gets really into his drums. Largely, they play just like they sing on the album, but it’s still great to hear the (little bit of) banter in between tracks and hear those riffs live.
Anyway, highly recommended. Here’s A-Punk.

I completed my first week at Wellcome this week.
There’s several big changes to my working life. For one thing, it’s a huge bloody building. I’ve gone from a workplace of 10 to a workplace of 530+ people. In a big glass building. With a helix-like sculpture at the end. And a ground floor atrium so big they call it ‘the street’ (which of course, has a cafe in the middle of it).
It’s funny the things that you notice are different. I knew moving to a big company there’d be better perks — bigger companies are, by virtue of their size and resources, able to better look after their staff. The premises are fully catered with a subsidised restaurant on the roof, overlooking London, serving a variety of full meals for £3 or less. They even have ‘fish day’ and ‘curry day’. Not to mention the cafe has breakfast for less than £1. I feel I may be changing my eating habits to just live at work…
I no longer have to make tea. There’s automated machines to do it for you (serving tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc.) in every kitchen area. Or you can go to the cafe to get it given to you for free. It is really weird not having a kettle in the kitchen though. Not to mention a toaster or a microwave. My second day I went out and bought stuff to make my own sandwiches, then realised the folly of my thinking. There aren’t plates or cutlery to make your own stuff, or a microwave to heat up your leftovers. But then, why would you when you can get hot meals or freshly made sandwiches for the same price as my lunchtime shop?? I feel I may put on weight these next few months…
Or I could work it off with the variety of social activities they have going. There’s a gym in the basement and pilates classes at lunchtime. They even do jazz and tap dancing classes (no, seriously). I might just take up table tennis or sign up for hte football. Seems a social way of meeting people and keeping fit.
Best thing about work? The fact that I get to use a Mac every day. Yes, after ten years of working life, I finally get to use an Apple Mac. And we’re getting an upgrade in a few weeks. A fully jazzed up PowerMac will soon be mine! I can’t believe how much that excites me. I’m such a geek.
Ok, one other thing that excites me. All our chairs have a funny coat hanger bit at the back so you can hang your coat on it (since everyone puts coats on chair backs anyway). And the toilets. The toilets are amazing. Well, any would be since my last job just had a small broom cupboard they termed the ‘gents’. Never underestimate how much of a difference nice toilets can make to your working life.
Oh yeah, the people are really nice too ~waves~. Not too sure about the work, since I haven’t done much so far. A bit of editing, but it’s mostly been taking it easy reading and getting to know the place and the people. I’ve had an endless series of meetings with different people, but I think I’m getting a handle on it.
It’s safe to say I’m going to be pretty comfortable. ^_^

The Tyn Church, Stade Mesto, Prague
I had an enjoyable four day stint in Prague during the week. It’s as far east as I’ve gone in Europe, very reasonable to fly to and stay in and generally a lovely place to visit. I’d highly recommend it. Full set of photos on Flickr.
For once, I wanted just a totally random, unplanned, relaxing holiday, with no pressure to see sights etc. I picked Prague on a whim and did practically no prep bar purchasing a Rough Guide and booking a random hostel. Much of my time was spent wandering around the various quarters, and thankfully, Prague is a wonderful city to lose yourself in.
My favourite memories: (more…)

I finished up at my old job yesterday. I’m officially no longer the news editor at SciDev.Net. In a week’s time I’ll be a science writer for The Wellcome Trust.
It’s a real change for me. I still very much want to be an Editor, but I’ve always thought it hard to get people to take me seriously if I haven’t had the writing experience and portfolio. I have gained a hell of a lot through my editorship at I,Science and SciDev.Net, but I’m sure people would look at my CV and ask, how did he get so far so fast without ‘doing time’ as a writer/journalist? Besides, I’ve always lacked confidence about my writing, and I think it’s time to get out of my comfort zone, stop hiding behind editing other people’s work and start writing for myself! I am a decent writer, and it’s got me this job, so I can only improve from here.
It is weird to leave a place I really like and people I really get on with. Things weren’t perfect, and I had my fair number of stresses and situations. As such, moving on is probably a good move at this time, particularly for a better salary :p Besides, having spent the majority of my working life at two small-sized places, working for a big one will be a good experience. I am a little scared — I never like change — but it’s time to sit up and step up. In the meantime, one week off (woo-hoo!) and a short break in Prague. Then we’ll see about that future.
Macross Frontier OST2 Nyan Tora. October 9, 2008

Is it Nyan Tora. or Nyan Tra? In any case I’m moved enough by this OST to write my first post in months.
Nyan Tora. is the second OST for Macross Frontier, an anime with which I was a little disappointed at the end, but which nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed and who’s music I can’t get enough of. Indeed, Macross F is responsible for getting the non-pop star related anisong back on top of the Oricon charts.
I’ve been listening to the first OST, Nyan Furo, on repeat for months. I’m a big fan of May’n’s vocals (What ’bout my star abd Diamond Crevasse ranking amongst my all time favourite songs) but something about Megumi Nakajima really touches my heart, which is weird since I definitely prefer Sheryl to Ranka :p
Anyway, loved the first OST but Nyan Tora blew my head off. I’m a nut when it comes to catchy ridiculously upbeat anipop and Nyan Tora has some of my favourite songs from the series. Northern Cross and Seikan Hikou I’ve already been listening to the singles for but I’ve been waiting aaages for the full versions of Ranka’s Ai Oboete Imasu Ka and Anata no Oto –a song so ridiculously sweet and catchy I fell in love as soon as I heard it. (Warning, saccharine anipop warblings coming up)
I’ve said it before, but thank God for the Net. It’s a miracle we can dl Japanese music within hours of it being released in the mother country. Of course, I’ve got the actual CDs already on order. What do you take me for, a pirate? ^_-
Great anisongs are what keep me going in life. Yak deculture!
