The JLPT test results are in and I finally have myself a certificate. Yes, I passed Level 4. I am not a complete idiot! Woo-hoo!
Breakdown of my scores:
- Writing-vocabulary 91/100
- Listening 76/100
- Reading-grammar 152/200
Giving a grand total of 319/400 or 80% , which is about what I aimed for.
Obviously I’m pretty pleased to have passed. But as previously stated, taking Level 4 – the lowest level you can do – is a double-edged sword. After studying for three years (with a year’s gap in between) I really should pass easily. However, parts of the test were a lot harder than I expected and as you can see my grammar isn’t great. Thankfully, that’s improving now that I’m studying at SOAS.
Still, a pass is a pass and it’s nice to get off the ground. I’d offer myself a reward, but I think a trip to Japan just about covers it…. and the perfect opportunity to expose the shallowness of my knowledge!
Level 3 next year then.

Right, most of the details for the trip have been worked out, but I’m still trying to book a couple of hotels. Worryingly, it’s for the first two nights of my accommodation. I don’t think Kobe on a Thursday will be too much of a problem, but finding a place for Kyoto on a Friday is becoming an issue. Everywhere I seem to find is fully booked! Damn Japanese school trips.

Planning is exhausting in itself

In a few hours, the 79th Annual Academy Awards kicks off and once again, no-one in Britain is going to see it live. Thank you Sky, for snapping it up for your subscription channels. Mind you, anyone nuts enough to stay up for six hours on a Sunday night probably paid up. In the days of BBC coverage, I’d do it, but I’m not paying for the privilege of drinking copious amounts of coffee and throwing popcorn at the screen.

Yes, this is rather generic

It’s almost four years to the day that I first visited Japan. Having powered up my Japanophilia and studied the language for three years, I’m finally making a return visit next month.
It was a pretty last minute decision – I rarely make such travel plans on such short notice. The primary reason is that my boss is to be on maternity leave very soon, which leaves me with a heavy degree of responsibility over the next nine months. With such a small office staff, I can’t justify taking a couple of weeks off in the autumn as I had planned. So it’s now or next year.
The good thing about Japan is I’ve already been there, so I don’t mind going with a little less preparation time. And I did promise myself a self-indulgent holiday after the stressful ‘breaks’ of last year.
The flight cost pretty much what I would have expected any other time of the year. The timing also means I’ll catch hanami, so hopefully I’ll get to see stuff like this. I’m planning to spend more time in Tokyo, though I’ll probably pop over to Kansai to briefly visit a few friends. I have a ticket to the Ghibli museum and a daytrip planned to Kamakura thus far. And shopping. Lots of shopping.

‘Kafka on the shore’ by Haruki Murakami February 6, 2007

In short: A darker Murakami?
Thoughts: I’ve heard it said that the Tokyo gas attacks had a profound effect on Murakami and that his works after the event are somewhat darker, with a more serious tone. Being the first ‘post-attack’ Murakami story I’ve read, this would seem to be the case. (more…)

For the first time in a long time I really enjoyed an episode of the OC – and it’s all down to that bundle of sunshine Taylor Townsend. (more…)
